Editing
Editing our piece was quite a long process for many reasons. As half the shots were done in widescreen we had to use a new programme that the editor and group didn’t feel very comfortable using. We had all had some experience using windows movie maker so moving onto premiere slowed the process down a lot as it took some time to get used to this new technology.
In comparison to our storyboard and script, our final piece was a lot different because we altered and added our chosen shots to make it flow more and to make our continuity better. For example, we switched two shots around as our actress had on a headband on before we could see her picking it up and putting it on.
We also had to take out our original idea of having the titles on a music book as we realised that we hadn’t filmed them long enough or had them big enough on the screen to look significant. We, instead, put them on using premiere, choosing a pink starred font but still placing them in a separate shot like we had previously planned.
Overall, I’m happy with the final edit and think that I it's very good considering how much we had to change from the original script.

Main Excercise Commentary
In our group, we decided to go for the social group you would normally expect to see in a chick flick film. We felt that we were all familiar with what you would see in this group so when it came to representing it I thought it was quite easy to do and was shown clearly in our piece.
Each member of the group researched a film that had the same social group as ours such as ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Camp Rock’. Most of them have the same sort of main character who aspired to be more popular or successful. We then looked at how they were represented through how they were framed, what they were wearing, the music played in the background and so on. We considered each aspect we researched and tried to apply this to our own chick flick/musical film.
Hairspray
Camp Rock
We showed this ‘girly’ and overly confident representation through, firstly, her dress codes. The dress that we picked out for her was very over the top and feminine to suit the characters stereotype. We made her bedroom have a similar girly feel to it with posters on the walls which represented her age as well as her social group. Finally, the music we chose reflected our characters stereotype. With a woman singing quite a upbeat and feminine sounding song, I thought it helped to represent the social stereotype of a young, over the top, girly teenager.
We chose our audience to be similar to the main character of our piece. Aiming our piece to an influential age of musical girls in their teens, we thought that this type of film would get their attention. (Audience Research)
The films we researched were aimed at the same age so we knew that we would not only be representing a social group but it would be representing the age and possibly the personality of our chosen audience. The music chosen was picked out to sound similar to the modern music teenagers listen to and the clothes and style of the main characters, although is much more exaggerated would be similar again to how a teenager might dress.
The company that I would expect this film to be distributed by would probably be a company like Disney as most of their audiences’ age group and social group is similar to ours. Most of their films are near enough the same to the one we have made with a chick flick and musical theme.
After the preliminary task, we had decided to use a different camera so that there was less problems uploading the shots onto windows movie makers. However, even when we did use the cameras that we thought were necessary, there were still a lot of problems when learning about the technologies.
Filming with the cameras given to us worked perfectly fine during our filming and we had little trouble getting it to work other than small problems we easily got around such as changing the battery. It was when it came to uploading them onto windows movie maker that proved to be difficult. The entire group had had some kind of experience with windows movie maker so all of us felt confident about editing. However, we soon realised that we would have to use adobe premiere as half of our shots were filmed in wide screen.
Learning about this new technology was hard to get my head around as it seemed much more complex as windows. However, as we began to become more familiar with it I realised there were a lot more things on there to help us with the editing such as a preview screen. Uploading the shots was much simpler and over all the new technology proved to be very helpful.
Looking back on my preliminary task, I think that I have come a long way in terms of understanding technologies and how much time and effort it takes to organise even a short film.
In our first practise, our organisation was already fairly good, as well as our group communication. However, I realised that there is always room for improved and used the mistakes from the first exercise to make the second one better.
Knowing what I missed out on in the first exercise helped me remember what the group is likely to forget in the main exercise such as outlines and photos of the locations, pictures of the progress of filming and editing etc. The mistakes we made in our first task such as technology issues, actors not turning up and so on, helped us deal with them early on in the process so they didn’t take up to much of our time.
Learning about the technology made a great improved when we began our filming and editing. Although our cameraman felt more familiar with the one used in the first task, when it came to editing our piece, there were a lot less issues uploading it as we did in the first exercise. Even though we did have some problems with the cameras given to us (having half the shots in widescreen), the technology was more familiar to our lecturer so these problems were easily overcome.
I think that the most important and most effective thing that I have learned in both the preliminary and main exercise is how important it is to stay in our groups and work together. By having such good group skills, we managed to stick well with our schedule and get everything we needed done before our filming on time and spread out evenly through the group.

Filming
When it came to filming our piece there were many problems that came across which meant that it took a lot longer than originally scheduled. We were first planning on filming on 19th however, our actress had trouble getting there so had to reschedule it for the 26th. Although this gave us more time to adjust our script and find a location for another scene we were planning on doing, it meant that there was less time for editing and organising our files.
We filmed the following week. Although we were pretty well organised, with all the scripts and props ready, other uncontrollable things got in the way of our filming. The weather, which we had wanted to be sunny for the mood of our film, was quite dull and rainy. This didn’t cause a huge trouble though as we shot the outside shot lower down so the cloudy sky wouldn’t be noticed.
We also had small problem with the camera as it ran out of batteries as soon as we started filming which did take some time to get sorted out and meant we didn’t have as much time at our second location.
Our actresses caused no problems at all and even though we forgot to get another actress to do a small part in our piece before we started filming, this was quickly overcame as we managed to find one without it turning into a big issue.
Once we began our filming, there weren’t any major issues in our first location (a music room) and the group discussed each shot carefully allowing our director to ensure we were on the right track. The filming went quite smoothly and managed to finish on time for our second location.
We had all organised how we were going to get to our next location, however, again there were problems that we couldn’t avoid such as traffic jams and road works which took a huge chunk of our time away and was left with a very small time to film in our second location. Although we did managed to film a couple of shots, we were no where near finished so decided to set another date for the group to film on.
Again, we chose to wait until the next Thursday so that everyone was able to be there. This time we managed to get everything we needed done, including adding a few shots we thought would look good. We ensured that somebody was taking pictures of everyone doing there chosen jobs.
Altogether, the process of filming was very slow and resulted in a lot less time to get our editing done, we shot everything we needed to our satisfaction and hopefully wont have any problems editing what we have.

'The First Reflective Main Exercise Blog Entry
The first thing that occurred to me when starting the main exercise was that we had a new member to the group. This made a huge difference to the groups planning as we had completely new ideas for this short film. As the everyone seemed to become more confident with each other and more confident with the ideas we were coming up with, it made the process fairly quick.
The first thing that we planned was the audience of our film. Originally we were going for an older audience to suit our theme of crime drama. However, as not many members of the group had much interest in drama films we found this quite difficult to plan and moved on to the genre of a ‘chick flick’. Although there is one member of the group who may not be as interested in this genre of film, this helped as we relied on him to stop us when he thought it would come out appearing to corny or over the top.
We then decided to make a draft script of our piece before doing the research so that later on in the process we could add or take away shots to make it more appropriate for our genre. Once our draft was complete, we then moved onto research films such as ‘camp rock’ and ‘hairspray’. As these are both musicals it brought a small element of corny that we wanted and they also started in a similar way to our (a girl wakes up and gets ready).
We continued to improve our script but came across a few problems when it came to how we were going to shoot them. Who would play the characters and the length of our final piece. When we came up with the rough length it was no way near what we were seeking to get out of it so the script still needs to be worked on to bring it to the standard we need.
Other work that we have done for the planning such as the SWOT wasn’t a problem. We had good communication skills and discussed what problems we are likely to come across and also discussed in advance how we would get passed them. Most of our problems were based on the location and time keeping as some member of the group felt that they may have difficulty with this. The location was a problem as we are planning to shoot a small part of it outside which we hadn’t done in our previous exercise.
Another problem that we began to face what the filming date. As we would be filming on two separate occasions in two locations, finding a time for the group and the actors was very difficult as well as coming up with the issue of our continuity, as the actor may look different on different days.
After doing the previous exercise of a short film, I have realised that there are many things I need to do that will hopefully improve in my next piece. The first would be to try to pay more attention to the technology that we will be using in our filming and editing as this proved a huge problem previously. As there were problems with the type of files which held us back quite a lot when it came to editing, me and my group will ensure we use the right equipment given to us.
Communication is also a thing I want to improve on and already feel like I am contributing more to the group when it comes to planning and discussing things such as filming date etc. As I feel more confident in my new group and more confident in the piece we are producing, I don’t feel this should be a problem to overcome at all.
Another thing I would like to improve on in this exercise is my organisation skills and how I should always be thinking ahead. Although this was not a major issue previously; there was still some problem when it came to filming as I had not thought of organising the room properly before our filming date. This way, we will hopefully film a lot faster and have less to worry about on the day.
Organising the schedule is also something I want to consider as the on the practise exercise, we were unaware of the time limit we had and rushed through our piece before realising we had a whole week left with nothing to do. If the schedule in this exercise is done properly then we should have more time to plan, film and edit which will help improve our final outcome.

Filming and Editing the Preliminary Exercise
Although our filming was quite successful in a lot of ways we still came across a few problems. Originally, when we first looked at the room, everything was more or less where we wanted it to be and the black brick wall was perfect for the location background that we wanted. However, on the day of the filming, the room was a lot more cluttered with the walls covered in large wooden blocks. We still used these though as they were still black and still gave the room a broken down feel to it.
The second problem we came across was the actors. We had found who we wanted a long time before filming so didn’t think about what we’d do if they didn’t show up. Unfortunately, one of our two actors we chose dropped out in the last minute so not only did we not have an actor, we didn’t have the dress codes we were going for. Luckily, we did manage to find a girl to fill in. Although the original idea was to have two men, it still worked well as a film and allowed us to then play around with the dominance a bit. The dress codes were not what we originally planned as we were going to have them dressed in smart suits but as our dominant character was still dressed in black, I think that it still worked out well.
Lighting was a big issue in our piece as none of our group had any experience using key lighting. There was a small amount of help though which gradually helped us get an idea of which light to use and how to brighten them more on the actors faces. It was not as well done as id have liked as throughout the filming we had to constantly change the lights around to make sure that we could see everything clearly through the camera.
Other than these issues, the filming still went pretty well after sorting them out. We had the right props such as the briefcase and had no trouble getting them whatsoever. The room was big enough to move the camera around the 180 degree angle and was able to use some extra equipment for the camera to move around better.
Once we had our actors, they did exactly what we needed them to do which helped us a lot when it came to filming as it was a lot less struggle to get through it without interruptions. They learned the script quickly and listened to the director well when we needed them to move around.
The representation of the women being the dominant hit man was still very effective without the dress codes. This was because all the shots that we had previously discussed all had that women in the dominant part of the rule of thirds and was always in a darker light than the other hit man to give her a sinister and powerful look. However, next time, I think we should sort the dress codes about way before filming.
Whilst filming, we made sure that we had plenty copies o the script so that everyone, including the actors, could see what we needed in our film. We also had our storyboards to help us with the camera shots. We mostly stuck to the script that we had already written, however, when we all felt that something should be changed we used the script and the camera to see if it would work better or worse.
We had a few problems when it came to editing as the cameraman had used his own equipment. This meant that the film couldn’t be uploading onto the computer. We changed the clips to avi but when they still didn’t work we used one of the group member’s laptops instead.
When it came to editing, our group decided that it would be best if we discussed how we wanted each clip and then have the editor make the final decision. Our communication was very good which helped us complete the editing very quickly. We had some help to advise us on how to make it flow better and eventually finished a short film that we were all pretty happy with.
We now know what kind of troubles we are likely to encounter net time so we will probably be using the cameras provided for us by the college so that we don’t have any problems with uploading the clips onto the computer.

First skills audit for the G321 Foundation Production
When I first looked at this piece of coursework I was quite worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everything we had to do. I knew that there wouldn’t be many problems within the group such as deciding whose role would be whose or planning our short film, but as there was a lot to go through, time keeping was my main priority.
However, I think that I used my skills to my advantage to help keep the deadlines as I was the script writer. I had had previous experience in both dialogue scripts and camera scripts so it was easy for me to develop them quite well. I also took to consideration what everyone had already discussed in the planning such as the characters dominants etc.
I made sure that for the preparation of our short film, everyone would have a say to what they wanted to see in the final piece. Therefore, when I wrote the script, I wrote a draft first before checking with everyone in the group agreed with it and if they wanted to change anything or add anything to it.
When I wrote the script, I made sure that I had researched enough to get ideas for it. I looked at other peoples final pieces of ‘the meeting’ and programmes that had the same theme as the one we are planning on doing. This allowed me to write a script that showed a clear dominance in one of the characters.
I thought id communicated pretty well in our group which helped a lot when it came to meeting the deadlines. As there was a lot to do, everyone had there own things to do and made sure the group was happy with what they had done. For example, me and another member of the group booked the location where we wanted our film to be done in.
When it came to filming our piece I think I did a pretty good job. As my role was not the director I made sure I didn’t force anything on the group and gave my advice when necessary. I let the director do that they needed to do and didn’t get in their way.
Over all, I think that I have overcame my first perception of this piece as me and my group have gone beyond the deadline so have more than enough time to edit and evaluate what we have filmed.
